What is Net Metering?

Net metering is a billing mechanism that allows solar system owners to export unused electricity back to the grid and receive credits for it. When your solar panels produce more electricity than you consume, the excess is fed back into the grid, and your utility company credits you for that power. These credits can then be used to offset your electricity consumption when your solar system isn't producing enough power, such as at night or during cloudy days.

In Pakistan, net metering is regulated by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) and implemented through various Distribution Companies (DISCOs) across the country.

Benefits of Net Metering

Financial Savings

Reduce your electricity bills by offsetting consumption with solar energy and earning credits for excess production.

Environmental Impact

Contribute to a cleaner environment by reducing reliance on fossil fuels and decreasing carbon emissions.

Grid Stability

Help stabilize the grid during peak demand hours by feeding excess electricity back into the system.

Net Metering Process in Pakistan

1

Install Solar System

Install a grid-tied solar system from an AEDB-approved vendor.

2

Submit Application

Apply to your respective DISCO with required documents.

3

Site Inspection

DISCO conducts a technical inspection of your installation.

4

Get Approval

Receive NOC and sign a net metering agreement.

5

Install Meter

Bi-directional meter is installed by the DISCO.

6

Start Exporting

Begin exporting excess electricity and earning credits.

General Requirements

  • Solar system must be installed by an AEDB (Alternative Energy Development Board) certified vendor
  • System capacity must not exceed the sanctioned load of the connection
  • Grid-tied inverter with anti-islanding protection is required
  • System must comply with NEPRA's technical standards and grid codes
  • Applicant must be the owner of the property where the system is installed

Important Considerations

  • Agreement Duration: Net metering agreements are typically valid for 3 years and can be renewed upon expiration.
  • Credit Expiry: Unconsumed credits usually expire at the end of each billing year, though policies may vary by DISCO.
  • System Capacity: Most DISCOs allow net metering for systems ranging from 1kW to 1MW, subject to certain conditions.
  • Documentation: Required documents typically include CNIC, property ownership proof, and electricity bill.
  • Processing Time: The entire process from application to activation typically takes 3-8 weeks, depending on the DISCO.
